To NewZealand for special color

“To find that one special color, that’s why I travel to the other side of the world” says Wim Bos, co-owner of Special Orchids and supplier of Supreme Selections cymbidium. “Growing cymbidiums is not only my profession, it’s also my passion. Last month I went to NewZealand, which has opposite seasons from Holland, to look for new varieties. I visited five growers and looked for possibilities to exchange plant materials. I found a wonderful pink one, a yellow one that flowers before November 1 (All Saints), and improved orange/yellow varieties. When I find a new variety, I immediately think of a possible market. When I see a red one for example I think of China.”

Speaking about the market, on his way to NewZealand Wim stopped in Dubai, where he visited one of Hilverda De Boer’s customers. Wim: “At this wholesale business I saw that they work with shorter stems. Longer stems are expensive for this market, but I’m now sending them a trial with 10 stems per box instead of 9. That’s how I always try to look for tailor made solutions. The philosophy of Special Orchids is to find win-win situations.”
